Character Information: Here!

Personality:

On the surface, Claude appears to be an easygoing class-clown sort of figure who rarely takes anything seriously, least of all himself. He's prone to wandering by his own admission, enjoys taking naps outdoors, and has a habit of goofing off around his more straightlaced classmates just to get a rise out of them, such as by affecting an exaggeratedly condescending tone around one of his younger peers who has a complex about being treated like a child or taking a lackadaisical, 'it is what it is' approach to foreign policy when discussing politics with one of his rivals for succession to rulership of the Leicester Alliance. He's self-effacing about his supposed shiftlessness, happily letting people assume what they will about him.

The observant, however, will note that there's much more to him than the casual jokester persona he likes to present. One of the first things that the player character notes about him is that his smile "doesn't reach his eyes," which in his case is less a result of some kind of inner turmoil as his cheerful facade being a disarming cover for his much more calculating nature. Claude is a tactician and schemer first and foremost, always feeling out the strengths, weaknesses, and reactions of the people around him and working on how to best use them to his advantage. He's often able to accurately guess how people will react to situations - and guess the truth of their situations by their reactions - with stunning accuracy, which he is a skill he uses to get his way. This also manifests in how he carefully controls how much information about himself he allows to get out, deliberately cultivating an air of mystery about himself and his origins in order to draw people in and doling out information as necessary to keep them interested or to change how they see him.

That said, he's not ruthless or self-serving by any means. Though he claims to be "the embodiment of distrust," cheerfully (though good-naturedly) mocking his more trusting peers for their naivete, he does genuinely care for the people around him, and will often take on extra work to help out those around him even as he puts up token objections. He's incredibly hard-working despite what he would have most people believe, spending long shifts in the library researching the history of the world and studying battle tactics, and even picking up chores that, as a member of the nobility, he could refuse as too menial. He actually rarely if ever makes much of his social status at all, finding the thought that he's in any way inherently better than his commoner peers laughable at best and bearing no small amount of frustration with the kinds of noble that do.

In fact, late in the game it's revealed that Claude's grand dream, which he's hinted at repeatedly throughout the story, is to upend the social order of Fódlan's nobility and its isolationist church and open the peninsula to the outside world, creating a world where all can live in harmony. Much of the drive behind this ambition stems from the fact that he was actually born outside of Fódlan in the neighboring country of Almyra, as the son of a Leicester noblewoman and an Almyran man. The discrimination he faced as a result of his mixed heritage inspired him to journey west to reconnect with his mother's side of the family, only to discover that Fódlan was no more tolerant of foreigners. This perspective came to define him in many ways, from his self-identification as an "outsider" to contributing to his distrust of Fódlan's major religion and generally more animistic approach to spirituality, prefering to thank the land for its bounty and to rely on the actions of men rather than fall back on faith in gods.
